This might sound a little strange, but one of my favorite holiday events is purchasing the Christmas tree. One of the reasons is that they always say, “Merry Christmas!”
I’ve often struggled with the idea of saying “happy holidays” because I just love hearing the sound of Merry Christmas.” I have a very close friend and mentor who celebrates Hanukkah, and every year, he sends me a holiday card that says, “Happy Christmas, Merry Hanukkah.”
So, I decided to dig around to do a little research on this topic. It’s amazing what you can Google. I Googled, “When did we start saying ‘happy holidays’ instead of ‘Merry Christmas’ in the U.S.?” It turns out that “happy holidays” might have been here even before “Merry Christmas!”
Holiday, believe it or not, takes its origins from “holy day.” How much of a dope did I feel like when I learned this? So, I am embracing saying “happy holidays.” I still love “Merry Christmas,” but I also love “Happy Christmas, Merry Hanukkah.”
So to all of you, Happy Christmas and Happy Holidays! And, I hope you had a very Merry Hanukkah.
