Psychological research shows that the success rate of reaching a resolution is approximately 10 times higher for people who want to change but don’t make a resolution.
Here are a few other statistics related to this topic:
- Several attempts at self-change result in higher success than those who only give it one shot.
- 70-85% of people who make resolutions drop them before the end of January.
- Only 8% of people accomplish their resolutions…ever.
Remember, you can find a statistic for whatever your beliefs are. But keeping in mind those statistics, what if you could be part of the 8%?
As a matter of fact, why not decide to be one of the 8%? If merely trying could make us more successful, then why not try? You all know that I hate the word “try.” One of my favorite quotes is by Yoda: “Try not, do or do not.” But it does seem like the simple act of trying does increase our success rates, so try.
Here are some tips if you decide to try and make some New Year’s resolutions (I like to call them New Year’s goals):
- Start small. Instead of saying, “I want to lose 50 pounds and work out seven days a week,” try, “I want to lose four pounds and work out 2-4 days a week in January.” By starting small, you are far more likely to stay with it!
- Be specific. Don’t just say you want to lose weight. Say how much, by when, and create steps to reach your goal.
- Be prepared for missteps. If you have a slip with your diet, recognize it, accept that you screwed up, adjust, and start fresh the next day.
- This one might be a little scary. Share your resolutions and goals with someone else. It’s much harder to give up on goals if you’ve shared them with another person or the public. It’s the ultimate accountability partner!
- Lastly, celebrate when you achieve a goal. So many of us forget this part. But, it is so important to recognize your hard work and accomplishments.
